Advertising Transparency
Ensuring user trust in Deals Insider's products and services is of utmost importance to us. Our goal is to provide users with the knowledge and ability to make well-informed choices regarding our online advertisements they encounter.
Trust in our company's practices helps us deliver a safe and enjoyable browsing experience for all individuals.
Display ads
Display advertisements are the primary form of marketing that we utilize. Deals Insider advertises on a variety of websites and mobile apps using creatives such as those in the example below. Ads are subject to change based on factors such as if you have previously visited the Deals Insider website (this is known as retargeting) or have seen a specific ad a certain number of times.
Targeting
We make use of several targeting techniques to decide when and where to show our ads including:
Basic
-
Geolocation: The geographic location of a device is estimated by using an IP address in order to show relevant deals that are in close proximity to the user.
-
Time of day: Some deals only apply to early birds or night owls or are time-sensitive.
-
Internet Service Provider (ISP): Through the IP address, we are able to guess a device's ISP that it is currently connected to. This information can be used to show deals and discounts that may save the user money on their current plan, or promotions from competing providers enticing the user to switch to a new service.
-
Device (User agent): Web browsers usually pass some information with each page request that describes the hardware and software of the device they are running on. This information can be used to offer deals related to the user's current device such as upgrades for an outdated mobile phone, trade-in promotions, or even new apps and games that are compatible with their platform.
All of the information for these basic targeting techniques is anonymously obtained through the act of browsing and is provided automatically by nearly every device that communicates on the internet.
Enhanced
-
Retargeting: As the user browses deals, we make a list of the categories that they view the most and ask the advertising platforms we work with to remember this person and their preferences. This is usually done by setting a cookie. When the user browses other websites, they might see our ads featuring relevant deals from their preferred categories.
-
Content categories: Websites and apps that display ads are able to hint to their advertisers what kind of content is being displayed at the time an advertisement is shown. For example, a page may be an article about travel, shopping, or dining. We use this information when available to display ads that are relevant to the content. For example, a page about dining might show an ad containing deals for local restaurants, or a page about travel might show an ad with specials for hotels and airline tickets.
-
Interests and attributes: Advertising platforms that apps and websites utilize collect information about their users' interests and often make this information available to their advertisers for the purpose of targeting. Most of the time, they guess what the interests are based on the content of the pages the user views. We use this information to display ads with deals that might be more relevant to certain categories of users such as being in a certain age group, pet owners, or frequent travelers.
It is important to note that this information is collected and provided by the advertising platforms we work with, and does not identify specific individuals.
